About Abbeville, AL - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!

Abbeville is a lovely small southern town which has managed to retain its historic character without getting “left in the dust.” The town is charming and the historic buildings throughout the community are beautiful.  Oh, and the seasonal weather creates opportunities for winter and summer outdoor fun. Kids can swim in the summer and sled in the winter.  However, even though all of that is great, the people here are the best part of Abbeville.  They are lovely, friendly, welcoming and proud of their community. You’ll visit and never want to leave.

The history of the local people goes back many centuries and began long before colonialists moved into the Wiregrass region of Alabama.  They were excellent farmers and settled the many creeks and streams in the area. The fertile soil and seasonal weather made it a good place to stay and farm.  And, that is what they did.  Other tribes were often nomadic.  But, this particular group stayed put. Interestingly, in order to make it possible for colonists to inhabit this area, this faction of the Creek nation battled at the side of Andrew Jackson in opposition to other tribes.  The evidence of Native American culture is still alive and well in the region. The Abbey Creek runs through the middle of town is often called by the Indian name for the creek: “Yatta Abba.” That translates to “a grove of dogwood trees”. Today, dogwoods still bloom along the creek each spring and are some of the most beautiful evidence of the seasons changing in the area.

Just as the seasons change, so do the landscapes and the people.   Abbeville was first settled by white settlers in 1822.  In 1859, a young man by the name William Calvin Oates organized a company of 121 men on the steps of the town courthouse and they marched northward, and though many were immortalized at Gettysburg’s Little Round Top, most of those men never returned to the town.  Oates lost his right arm in battle, which he did not allow to stop him.  He resumed his legal career following his return.  He then served seven consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.   He was later made the state governor.
